Fresh-produce markets – popularly known as “Wet Markets” abound in Hong Kong. Some are municipal markets with everything under one roof – others are located along the street-side. Shamshuipo combines the best of both – around Ap Liu and Pei Ho Streets.

Shamshuipo is one of the older, and more “authentic” residential districts in Kowloon and an exploration of its market streets is always a revelation.

On this exploration we will visit a number of produce stalls and learn how thousands of Hong Kong people, every day of the year, transform various fresh and dry ingredients into tasty, economical family meals. Fish and seafood, poultry, meat, dried foodstuffs, herbals and medicinals, fruit and vegetables will all be explored. Sourcing, provenance, weights and measures, hygiene and other common issues and concerns will all be discussed and evaluated.

We will finish our exploration at the cooked-food stalls on the top floor of Pei Ho Street Market to enjoy a welcome cup of tea.

Details on where to meet for the walk will be sent to you once your booking and payment is received.
