Stanley Walk - 17 NOV
Explore Stanley's history
Stanley is one of Hong Kong Island’s oldest village settlements. Extensive connections remain to its fishing and sea-faring past, as well as various religious groups that made their homes here, and enduring physical links to the Pacific War era. On this three hour walk we will first go to Stanley Military Cemetery, where we will discuss the significance of this historically-important graveyard, learn something of the wartime Stanley Internment Camp, which included nearby St. Stephen’s College, and the European and Indian Married Quarters at Stanley Prison (but not, as it commonly believed, the actual prison buildings) as well as the cemetery.
After exploring the cemetery we will walk back up along Wong Ma Kok Road to Stanley village. There we will note the old Stanley Police Station, the group will proceed via Stanley Market Street and Stanley Main Street to the Tin Hau Temple, and finally we will see the exterior of the recently-reconstructed Officer’s Mess, which stood in Central until the early 1980s.
