08.11: Joy, Despair and Redemption
09.11: Evening in the Palace of Reason
10.11: Bach - Father and Son

For three nights in November, the Prison Yard becomes Hong Kong’s newest and most unusual concert venue for the performances by the renowned Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn (WKO), one of Germany’s most established ensembles. The three programmes, though exploring vastly contrasting moments of Berlin’s history, all share their starting point in a fascinating historical event which took place in May 1747, when the elderly JS Bach was summoned to the palace of Frederick the Great of Prussia. Bach was invited to improvise on a meandering theme written by the King. He rose to the challenge immediately, and took the theme much further, putting the original theme through a series of musical metamorphoses, and finishing A Musical Offering, a gift for the King in the following weeks.

The three evenings feature renowned soloists alongside WKO, performing the most exquisite musical masterpieces by JS Bach, CPE Bach, Mendelssohn, R Strauss and more.

“Projekt Berlin”

04.11.2019 – 17.11.2019

In the head-on collision of the old and the new, of the classical and the contemporary, of order and subversion, Berlin in 2019 is the most thrilling and distinctive one among all world cities. Its history has seen it razed and rebuilt, destroyed and reinvented, torn in two and reborn. Its intrinsic resilience always finds new edge and relevance in every era. Projekt Berlin is an autobiography of a city whose indomitable instinct for survival has made it a powerhouse of creativity across the full spectrum of the arts. Through light installations, live concerts, film screenings, street art and flashmob performances, Tai Kwun seizes the occasion to celebrate a city, which despite everything that history has thrown in its way, has found its voice in every age.
